Jonathan Larson
(1960-1996) grew up listening (and singing along)
to many kinds of music. His parents usually had
folk or classical music on the stereo. The whole
family loved musicals, and Jonathan was increasingly
drawn to the sounds of Billy Joel, The Who and
The Police. For him, music was about sharing.
He liked to harmonize and was constantly playing
songs (his own, or some new discovery) for friends.
He even taught a nephew's pre-school class how
to write a song.

Prior to writing and
filming "Away We Go" with Bob
Golden, Jonathan contributed background
melodies for two Sesame Street segments
and for book-with-cassette adaptations of
the films "Land Before Time" and
"An American Tail". While "Rent"
was going into production Off-Broadway,
Jonathan whipped up a song where Warner
Bros icon Sylvester the Cat urges young
couch potatoes to get up and move. In addition
to "Rent", Larson wrote the musicals
"Superbia" and "tick, tick...BOOM!"
and music for the shows "J.P. Morgan
Saves the Nation" and "Blocks". |
Not every
child will grow up to write Pulitzer, Tony
and Obie award-winning shows. But every
child — and the people who care for
them — can enjoy watching this sing-along
video. Go ahead and sing, dance around,
shake a tambourine. Music is a wonderful
way for all ages to have pleasure together. |
